Center become famous thanks to the monk cappuccino Padre Pio from Pietralcina, who, consecrated priest in 1910, withdrew himself to conduct ascetic life in the convent of St. Giovanni Rotondo, in the Gargano.

 Padre Pio became  famous from 1918, when he received the stimmates and buit, with the alms of the believers, the House of relief of the suffering in 1947.

Nowadays become place of pilgrimage, it welcomes tourists and devotees from the whole world
