Drive along the Sorrento Coast to Pompeii. Visit of the excavation of this ancient commercial city, unique in the world. Nowhere else are we able to see so vividly how the ancient civilizations lived. You can see aspects of life 2000 years ago, preserved by the volcanic ash that was thrown from Vesuvius in the great eruption of 79 A.D. Pompei was only rediscovered in the 18th century. In the last few years every possible effort has been concentrated on restoration and excavation, continually bringing light to new and sensational bringing light to a new and sensational discoveries.
Then we move to Herculaneum. Unlike the commercial city of Pompeii , Herculaneum was considered a seaside resort and port where wealthy Romans came to holiday.
This resort was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. however not by the ashes and lava as Pompeii , but by a torrent of mud flooding down from the slopes of the Volcano. Having solidified , it became “tuffa” which constituted for centuries the best possible defence from atmospheric agents. For this reason houses, wooden elements, foodstuffs and fabrics are preserved intact thus offring a unique vision of private life in Roman times.
